Long before Nelly wrote a rap song about it, the Air Force 1 was created by designer Bruce Kilgore to be the first basketball shoe to feature Nike Air technology. It was originally released in 1982 and shelved a year later. The Nike Air Force 1 was re-released a few years later in 1986 with upgraded design and has been a huge part of the Nike collection ever since.
Though the years, the AF1 has stayed pretty much the same as the original re-release from a design standpoint, though it’s seen nearly 2,000 different colorways. And even with all those different options, the Air Force 1 is most popular by a huge margin in two different colorways: the white on white Air Force 1s and the black on black Air Force 1s.
It’s that classic look that put the Air Force 1 on the map, and since, it’s inspired so many artists, musicians, designers and so on. It’s just one of those shoes that transcended sneaker culture into the mainstream.
The AF1 is one of the most influential shoes of all time. Though originally created for performance on the basketball court, the Nike Air Force 1 has become something of a cultural symbol. For one, it was pretty much adopted as the official shoe of rap music all through the 2000s and beyond.
Of course, there’s the 2002 Nelly song about the Air Force 1 that everybody knows, appropriately titled “Air Force Ones,” but hip-hop and rap music are replete with references to the AF1 past that. In 2007, Kanye West collaborated with Nas and KRS-ONE to release a song called “Classic (Better Than I’ve Ever Been)” that makes repeated references to the AF1. They even performed it on MTV2 for the Nike Air Force 1 25th Anniversary Party.
In fashion, the Air Force 1 became synonymous with inner-city style, and even earned the “Uptowns” nickname because of its popularity in Harlem, New York. The smooth, simple style of the Air Force 1 make it the perfect complement to everything from athletic gear to casual wear.
Apart from the obvious notoriety as a basketball shoe—worn most notably by NBA stars like Rasheed Wallace and Jerry Stackhouse—the AF1 has been a popular choice for fashion-forward celebrities, fashion icons and men and women in general.
Something about the simplistic design of the Air Force 1 makes it an unforgettable shoe that was made for performance, but ultimately had a broader influence outside of sports.
The most notable thing about the Air Force 1 design is the differences between the high, mid and low AF1s. The differences are obvious and significant.
The high Air Force 1 comes with a velcro strap that secures across the ankle. The high strap can be moved, and in some models, can be removed completely. The Air Force 1 mid strap is typically secured to the shoe and cannot be removed. The Air Force 1 low doesn’t have a strap, but keeps the same style as the high and mid versions.
Other elements of the design are the flat soles and rounded, almost boot-like edges and the iconic Nike swoosh that streaks across the upper.
This is the simplest formula, but there were many style variations through the years. One of the most interesting is the Nike Air Force 1 Special Field, with heavy duty uppers and a double strap. The Special Field design is more military-esque than the original Air Force 1. Another recent variation is the Air Force 1 Ultra Flyknit, which uses Nike’s Flyknit material to make the shoes lighter and more sleek. These also come in high, mid and low.
