What would you do if you were assaulted by a 6 foot, 170 pound man?

It's 9:30 on a Tuesday morning as you head downtown to do some grocery shopping.  It's just another day of hectic schedules and too many people to see.  As you park your car your mind is filled with your list of 101 things to do.  Stepping out of your car you are startled as you hear a flurry of rushing feet behind you.  As you look up your heart sinks as you feel a tall dark figure press himself against your back, holding a knife.  Forcing you into your car your mind races as you are stunned... and trapped.  You think to yourself, "This can't be happening!,  It's broad daylight!,  This can't be real!"

Does this scenario seem impossible? Improbable?

In a report by the American Medical Association regarding the Facts About Sexual Assault, this is what was said:

  • Sexual assault continues to represent the most rapidly growing violent crime in America, claiming a victim every 45 seconds.

  • Over 700,000 women are sexually assaulted each year.

  • Fewer than 50% of rapes are reported.

  • Approximately 80% of sexual assaults against women are committed by friends, acquaintances, intimates, and family members.  The remaining 20% are perpetrated by assailants unknown to the victim.

  • Lonnie Brostow, M.D., and former AMA president said, sexual assault is a silent-violent epidemic growing at an alarming rate and traumatizing the women and children of our nation.

If there's one thing I've learned from 16 years of teaching self-defense to women, it's that you can prevent a violent or sexual assault.  How?  It starts with knowledge.

Most women know "about" the threat of sexual assault, but few know just how much of a threat it is.  Let's be real, if you knew that every 45 seconds a house was being burned down by arson, how long would you wait before getting fire insurance?  If you knew that every year 700,000 cars were being stolen, how long would it take for you to invest in an alarm?  If you knew that 1 out of every 3 children would be abducted, how much time and effort would you immediately put forward to ensure the protection of the children that you love?

So now that you know, what will you do to protect yourself from harm?

The ability for women to be able to defend themselves from harm is not a luxury, it's a necessity... and we can show you how.  We can give you the information, skills, and confidence you need, to help you avoid becoming a victim of a violent or sexual assault.

Never become a victim

It's not enough to hope that you never become targeted or attacked...

you must decided to take action and find out how to assault-proof your life.

Don't just ignore the facts...

increase your awareness regarding violent and sexual assaults to ensure that you never become a victim.

Don't be caught off guard...

take an objective look at your life to find out what dangerous habits you have.

build the confidence you need to live with peace of mind.

But don't take my word for it...

I have been a Tae Kwon Do student for 4 1/2 years now and it still tickles me when friends or acquaintances learn of my favorite form of exercise. After the shock wears off, two questions normally follow, Do you think you could protect yourself if you had to?, and Why Martial Arts?

To be able to answer the first question with an "absolutely" is personally empowering. I have learned effective self defense tools I know I can rely on to defend myself if the need ever arises. As a woman, possessing the ability and the confidence to fight back if necessary is vital and I am thankful for the training that provides this benefit. Though, as out junior students recite before and after each class, I pray i will never have to use my art.

The answer to the second question began with my two boys. They got involved with martial arts as something new to try and, as a mother, I quickly began to appreciate the value focus of the school. Kicks USA esteems the character attributes I am striving to live myself and teach my children. The expectation of honesty, integrity, firness, mental and spiritual growth as well as friendship building, mutual edification, and great fun. Once my boys moved up to the adult level, that is when I began to think maybe I might like to do this for myself. There were a few adult women students (middle aged women like myself) I began observing during my boys class time. I was amazed by their
tenacity. Many aspects of the sport were challenging for them, but their willing spirits helped them accomplish so much. My instructor often reminds us that "You can do more than you think you can". These women believed that statement. I was inspired by their hard work, their willingness to meet the challenges that came and the attitude of never giving up, not just in the school environment, but in their personal lives as well. I wanted that too. After 4 1Ú2 years, I have faced similar struggles. Remembering their commitment helps remind me why I do this. Kicks USA is a place that keeps me accountable to personal growth and it is also an environment that encourages me to live with the attitude of always striving to do my best. Sometimes I'm required to step out where it is not comfortable. But, I have learned that is where growth happens. At times, the challenges seem overwhelming, but I am blessed with awesome instructors who will do anything to help all their students succeed and my fellow students that are always encouraging me to press on. This is something we do for each other. That's what I love the most.

I have been at Kicks USA for almost 2 years now. When I originally started my goals were to find an activity that I could do on a regular basis. I wanted to lose weight, improve my strength, meet new people, learn self-defense, and ultimately earn my black belt. Since I started at your studio I have realized all of my goals except the last one, the black belt, but I am determined that will happen too. There are many new people in my life that I am sure that I will have as friends for a long time. My life outside of taekwondo has also changed. The training has provided me with tremendous stress relief. My energy has increased. I am more confident in my dealings with others; better able to organize my time; and more focused on completing tasks. Overall, I am just a much happier person. I look forward to my training each and every time. There are times when I am tired and sore from the training and I never want to complain; I prefer to say thank you.

The classes are varied and the skills worked on are what you would expect in a traditional taekwondo setting. The focus is on mind and body. The concern is not just on the physical training, but also on discipline, responsibility, respect, courtesy, and perseverance. I have also enjoyed the work we have done with some of the weapons. It adds another interesting dimension to the training.

Beyond my own training I have been inspired by what I have seen others accomplish during training. it is amazing to see the changes and rewards that others gain during their training. The environment is such a positive one, that if a person sticks with it, they can't help but improve and enjoy what they are doing. Perhaps the most exciting to watch are the children. They learn quickly about discipline, integrity, responsibility, and goal setting.

There is no doubt that there is a lot of work involved, both physically and mentally, but in my mind it is worth every second.

I am proud to be part of the Kicks, USA family and look forward to many more years of training. My sights are still set on getting that black belt and beyond.  Kicks USA is an awesome organization based on strong values.

Within just a few classes you too will learn:

  • skills that will help you to remain calm when faced with danger

  • powerful tricks to allow you to escape from a choke hold

  • 3 easy to learn moves that free you when an attacker grabs your wrists

With simple tools like this imagine the freedom and security you can feel.  Of course, you may not feel that you have the strength and ability to make these moves work.  I understand.  Many women feel the same way, when they start.  But the truth is, anyone can do it, because it's more about balance and technique than strength and power.  Consider these key points:

1.  Double your physical power - without weight training.  With a few principles of body balance and coordination you can punch and kick with devastating power.

2.  Avoid an attack before it even begins by learning common sense self-defense strategies

3.  Control your fears by increasing your confidence.  Learn to defend yourself while maintaining control through fun and effective interactive drills.
